Varsity Game Summaries
March 27, 2009 Newport Harbor - 5Esperanza - 4

Early inning struggles continued for the Aztec starting pitching against Newport Harbor. Trevor Dillon needed only 9 pitches to breeze through the 1st, but ran into trouble in the 2nd. After a hit batter and two walks, the next batter hit a home run to right center for a four run lead. The Aztecs fought back to tie the game over the next three innings. Ryan Bergman was a one man offense as he hit solo home runs in the second and fourth innings. He also drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single. Ryan was 4 for 4 on the day. Trevor Magno tied things up with a sacrifice fly. The Aztecs had a chance to take the lead in the fifth, but Dillon was called out at the plate on a terrible call. Frankie Patino and Sean Michel held Newport Harbor scoreless to the bottom of the ninth when the Sailors scored the winning run and a sacrifice fly.

March 31, 2009 Esperanza - 8Fountain Valley - 0

The Aztecs got their first league win at home against Fountain Valley. Gary Apelian and Frankie Patino combined for the first shut out of the year allowing only three hits. Apelian was the starter and went five innings with Patino pitching the sixth and seventh. Patino got the Barons to hit into a double play in each inning. Justin Viele opened the game with a base hit and was driven in by Dennis Holt. The Aztecs added four more in the second with Jonathan Maciel collecting the big hit and driving in two. Maciel had three hits on the day with three RBI's. Viele, Holt and Ryan Bergman each had multiple hit days as the Aztec offense combined for eleven hits in the 8 - 0 victory.

April 2, 2009 Marina - 3Esperanza - 0

The Aztecs were blanked on Thursday. Marina's lefty, Paul Strong threw a seven inning complete game no-hitter to beat the Aztecs 3 - 0. The Aztecs did have several opportunities to score, but could not get a timely hit. Dennis Holt started on the mound and had his best outing of the year, throwing five strong innings to keep things close. Frankie Patino got in another strong inning of work finishing up the game.

April 4, 2009 Edison - 4Esperanza - 2

The Aztecs got another quality start on the mound as Trevor Dillon held the first place Edison Chargers to three runs on two hits through the first five innings. Frankie Patino pitched the 6th and 7th innings and kept the Aztecs close. The offense had several chances to put the Aztecs ahead in the game, but again, could not come up with the timely big hit. Gary Apelian was the leader of the offense as he was 3 for 3 at the plate. The Aztec's next game will be in the National Classic tournament at CSUF on Monday April 13 at 7:00pm.

April 13, 2009 Esperanza - 8Mamaroneck, NY - 7

The Aztecs defeated heavily favored Mamaroneck High School of New York 8-7 in the first game of the Classic. Gary Apelian anchored the offense by going 3 for 3 at the plate including a 5th inning grand slam to put the Aztecs ahead in the game.  He also scored 3 times. Another big offensive play came in the 4th inning as Troy Newman “squeezed” home Apelian from third as freshman Nick Catalano followed and scored from second base without a throw to the plate.Justin Viele added a double and scored twice.  Dennis Holt reached base 3 times, as he was twice hit by a pitch and also walked.  Clay Shepard drove in the game winner in the 6th. Dennis Holt and Trevor Dillon worked on the hill to keep the Aztecs close until Apelian dropped the bomb.  Sean Michel came in to pick up the win and Frankie Patino picked up the save in the 7th inning.

April 14, 2009 Esperanza - 10Arch Bishop Mitty - 3

The Aztecs surprised Archbishop Mitty of San Jose in game 2 of the Classic with an over powering offense. Gary Apelian blasted his second grand slam in two games with a home run to deep center field in the 6th  inning to break open a 5-3 game.  James McCluney, Ryan Bergman, and Conner Battaglia each drove in a run.  Dennis Holt collected 3 hits and scored twice.  John Maciel singled twice and scored 3 times. Apelian also picked up the win on the mound pitching the first 5 innings.  Tyler Torrez came on in relief to hold Mitty scoreless in the 6th and 7th innings. The final score was 10-3.  The Aztecs face off with Mater Dei Wednesday night at Cal State Fullerton at 8:15 pm.

April 15, 2009 Mater Dei - 6Esperanza - 5

Esperanza and Mater Dei battled in a tight game in the National Classic at Cal State Fullerton as the lead changed hands several times.  Esperanza scored first in the second inning as Travis Almazon doubled and was driven in by Troy Newman.  Justin Viele singled and scored in the third as Alamzon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  The Aztecs big inning was the sixth as they scored three runs with two outs to take a one run lead.  Almazon singled to lead off the inning as he, James McCluney and Viele scored.  Dennis Holt also forced in a run with a bases loaded walk. Mater Dei tied the game with one run in the sixth inning. They pushed across a run for the win in the seventh that put them into the finals. The pitchers kept the Aztecs close as Garret Skomsvold got the start on the mound with Brandon Johnston, Tyler Torrez, and Frankie Patino also getting in some work.

April 16, 2009 Esperanza - 4Palm Beach FL - 1

The Aztecs got a very solid performance from starting pitcher Kevin Jurkatis as he pitched a complete game in the National Classic at El Dorado.  He allowed one run on only five hits.  He only issued one walk and struck out one. Johnathan Maciel drove in the tying run in the third inning with a base hit.  The Aztecs then took the lead by scoring a run without a hit as Ryan Bergman scored on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Michel in the fourth inning.  This put the Aztecs up 2-1.  Dennis Holt provided Jurkatis with some cushion to work with in the fifth as he homered to right center and drove in Justin Viele who led off the inning with a walk. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the Aztecs who finished the tournament in third place with a 3-1 record.  The team returns to Sunset league play on Saturday at Edison at 11 am.

April 18, 2009 Edison - 6Esperanza - 0

The Aztecs traveled to Edison for the third game of the series. Justin Viele, Gary Apelian and Troy Newman were the only Aztecs to reach base as they each had base hits. Starting pitcher Trevor Dillon again kept the Aztecs close.  He struck out five with no walks.  The game was scoreless going into the fifth until Edison scored two on a home run to left.  Tyler Torrez and Frankie Patino pitched the final two innings and the final score was in favor of Edison 6-0. The Aztecs take on Los Alamitos twice next week.

April 24, 2009 Esperanza - 12Los Alamitos - 2

The Aztecs played game 3 of the Los Al series at home. It was a tight game thru the fist 4 innings. Each team scored 1 run in the first. Justin Viele and Dennis Holt led off the game with base hits.  Viele scored on a sac fly by Gary Apelian.  The Aztecs added 2 more runs in the 3rd as Ryan Bergman singled, Travis Almazon walked and Clay Shepard drove them both in with a base hit. Starting pitcher Trevor Dillon went 4 innings and left with a 3-1 lead.  Los Al scored in the 5th to tighten up the game but the Aztec offense exploded in the 5th and 6th to score 7 runs.  Ryan Cooper drove in 3 runs.  Ryan Bergman lead off the 7th with a home run and Shepard and Troy Newman each scored twice.  The 13 hit attack was lead by Justin Viele, Ryan Bergman, Travis Almazon, Clay Shepard, and Troy Newman as each had 2 hits for the day. Tyler Torrez and Kevin Jurkatis came in and held Los Al to 1 run in the final 3 innings to give the Aztecs the win at 12-2.  It was the second win of the week for the Aztecs.  They play Newport Harbor @ home on Wednesday.

April 22, 2009 Esperanza - 12Los Alamitos - 7

The Aztec offense started off a bit slow against Los Al ace Beau Wright.  Dennis Holt woke it up with a 2 run home run in the fifth inning that scored Ryan Cooper who had a double to get on base.  This gave the Aztecs a 1 run lead but Los Al tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Gary Apelian started on the hill for the Aztecs as both starting pitchers went 7 innings where the score was tied 2-2. In the 9th inning pinch hitter James McCluney homered to center field to again give the Aztecs a 1 run lead.  Los Al would tie the score in the bottom of the inning.  The Aztecs scored 3 in the 10th as Travis Almazon and Clay Shepard each has RBI doubles.  Los Al would tie it in the bottom of the inning by scoring 3. The Aztecs then scored 6 in the 11th inning with 7 hits.  Cooper, Justin Viele, Dennis Holt,Gary Apelian, Ryan Bergman, Shepard, and Troy Newman each had big hits in the inning. Frankie Patino and Tyler Torrez pitched the extra innings with Torrez picking up the win as the final score was 12-7.

April 29, 2009 Esperanza - 12Newport Harbor - 2

The Aztecs put 12 runs on the board at home against Newport Harbor. There were many offensive stars for the Aztecs.  The one and two hitters in the line up reached base 10 out of 10 times as Justin Viele was 4 for 4 with a walk and Dennis Holt was 2 for 2, walked twice and also reached base on a error.  Dennis Holt had the big hit in the 4th inning driving in 2 to give the Aztecs a 3-2 lead.  Gary Apelian, Ryan Bergman, Travis Almazon, Clay Shepard, and Troy Newman each had base hits as the Aztecs had 12 on the day. Pinch hitter extraordinaire James McCluney again came off the bench in the 5th to double in a run.  He is batting .1000 in the Sunset League. Gary Apelian again turned in a solid start on the mound holding Newport to 2 runs in 4 plus inning.  Tyler Torrez and Garrett Skomsvold closed out the win. The same two teams play again on Friday at Newport Harbor.  

May 1, 2009 Esperanza - 13Newport Harbor - 3

The Aztecs traveled to Newport Harbor on Friday.  The game looked a lot like the game earlier in the week as the Aztecs scored 13 runs in a 13-3 victory.  The Aztecs scored 1 in the first and it was 1-0 going into the third.  The Aztecs scored 2 in the third as Gary Apelian and Ryan Bergman each drove in a run. Clay Shepard and Trevor Dillon singled to start the fourth.  Dennis Holt then doubled in a run and John Macial blasted a home run to center to also score Holt.  Gary Apelian then added his third hit of the game.  Ryan Bergman then homered down the left field line.  Ryan Cooper also singled as the Aztecs scored 6 runs on 7 hits in the inning. James McCluney led off the 5th with a solo home run to left center as the Aztecs continued to flex some offensive muscle.  Trevor Magno drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning with a shot up the middle. Aztec starting pitcher Trevor Dillon enjoyed the offensive support as he held the Sailors scoreless for 5 innings spreading out 4 hits and picking up a win. Garret Skomsvold made his second appearance on the mound this week and pitched the sixth.  Frankie Patino closed it out by pitching the seventh. The Aztecs play 2 BIG games with Fountain Valley next week.     

May 8, 2009 Esperanza - 15Fountain Valley - 6

Justin Viele started the game with a double down the left field line and then stole home to get the offence started.  The Aztecs scored three in the 1st inning on the way to a 15-6 victory at home against Fountain Valley.  The win gave the Aztecs the sweep of the 3 game series and extended their winning streak to six games. Trevor Dillon went four innings for the win. Tyler Torrez, Kevin Jurkatis, and Frankie Patino each pitched an inning for the Aztecs. The Aztecs finish up league play next week with 2 games against the first place team Marina.
 
May 6, 2009 Esperanza - 3Fountain Valley - 0

Gary Apelian shut out the Barons for a complete game 3-0 victory. James McCluney had the big hit as he belted a 2 run pitch hit home run (again) to put the Aztecs up 3-0. The Aztecs are at home vs Fountain Valley on Friday.

May 12, 2009 Esperanza - 3Marina - 2

Gary Apelian pitched a seven inning gem against Marina.  After seven it was tied at 2-2 in another Sunset league classic. Clay Shepard launched a walk off home run to left for the game winner in the bottom of the eighth.  It was the Aztec's seventh straight league win and their first against the first place Vikings. Frankie Patino picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning.
 
May 14, 2009 Esperanza - 10Marina - 2

The Aztecs finished out league play at Marina with their 8th league win in a row.  They improved their league record from 1-6 to 9-6 and finished in third place one game out of second. Trevor Dillon took a no hitter into the fourth inning and had plenty of offensive support.  John Maciel drove in 2 runs in the first inning with a single down the third base line.  He also crushed a 3 run home run in the fourth inning to bring his RBI to total for the game to 5.  Gary Apelian also had a big game.  He doubled in 2 runs in the third inning and hit a solo home run in the sixth.  He drove in 3 runs total.  Travis Almazon and James McCluney also had RBIs. Tyler Torrez and Frankie Patino each pitched an inning to close out the game.
The Aztecs will learn on Monday who and where they will play in the first round of CIF playoffs.  They will most likely be traveling to an away game.
